Transition Elements : Chemistry Short Notes

Transition elements are those elements whose two outermost shells are incomplete. Elements in d block in modern periodic table come under transition elements that is partially filled or any element which can form stable cations with incompletely filled d orbital.

  • All d-block elements (groups 3-12) are transition elements except Zinc, Cadmium, and Mercury because of filled d orbital.
  • paramagnetic in nature because most of the transition metals have unpaired electron in their electronic configuration.
  • Transition metals often form colorful compounds due to d-d electronic transitions.
  • They exhibit high melting and boiling points, as well as good conductivity.
  • Transition elements commonly act as catalysts due to their ability to change oxidation states during reactions.

The f-block elements are termed as inner transition elements because the last electron enters the anti-penultimate shell. f-block elements are divided into two series, namely lanthanoids and actinoids.

There are 18 groups and 7 periods in the modern periodic table. Total elements are 118 out of which 91 are metals, 7 are metalloids, and 20 are non-metals.

📌 Remember elements like boron, silicon, germanium, arsenic, antimony, tellurium and Astatine show both metals and non- metals properties falls under the category of the metalloid.
