Ethylene : Chemistry Short Notes

Ethylene (C2H4 or H2C=CH2) is nonpolar molecule and gaseous plant hormone, It is responsible for senescence in plants.

  • It is essential natural plant hormone and is used to force fruit ripening in agriculture.
  • It can be used to create a chemical weapon called sulfur mustard gas.
  • It is olefiant gas which is used to make anaesthetics, refrigerants and other chemicals.
  • In laboratory, ethylene and acetylene can be distinguished by Tollens reagent.
  • Standard EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid) solution is used to determine the Hardness in water.

📌 Remember – The five major groups of plant hormones auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins, ethylene, and abscisic acid (ABA). Ethylene glycol has a low freezing point that’s why it is added to aviation gasoline to prevents the freezing of petrol. Acetylene is used in the artificial ripening of fruits.
